1st year
Alexis Aplasca, MD
Graduated from St. George University She attended undergraduate school at State University of New York. Independent research endeavors included areas such as "engendering of anatomical depictions and its influence on the study of medicine" and & "hydrogen bonding and dimerization on valeramide cell membrane permeation". She spent a few years as a associate chemist with Wyeth Research. She co-authored a couple of articles in the Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Letters and presented a few posters. She has learned a lot from her experience as a special education teacher, which she hopes to foster further in the Triple Board Program. She enjoys music--piano, guitar and singing.

Gwendolyn Jones, MD
Graduated from Creighton University Sch. of Medicine Her undergraduate studies were done at Bernard College in New York, with a BA in Music, and enjoys playing the violin. She recently participated with a summer program in a rural area of the Dominican Republic, assisting to provide primary and dental care. She has volunteered on a number of occasions with services such as the Essential Pregnancy Services, Magis homeless clinic, St. John's Parish, and Project CURE India. Prior to medical school, she worked with a Psychiatry Department in North Carolina on a project on Septin-5 gene and schizophrenia. Her experiences in Nambia and the Dominican Republic have brought her to appreciate Pediatrics and Psychiatry.

Bernard Riola, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine Bernard is a graduate of the Imi Hoola Program at the University of Hawaii. He has worked many hours at the Shriners Hospital, helping to create a comfortable environment for the patients and families. This brought him to an interest in Pediatric Psychiatry. He hopes to be able to return to Kauai for private practice, and enjoys playing the slack-key guitar and creating magic tricks.

Amanda Schroepfer, MD
Graduated from Univ. of Med. and Dentistry of New Jersey Amanda is a member of Psi Chi, the National Psychology Honor Society. She is attracted to the Triple Board program because of the interpersonal team approach offered with Psychiatry. She enjoyed snowboarding and traveling, and is happy to be Hawaii for residency.

Ruby Agoha, MD
Graduated from State University of New York Ruby comes to us from State University of New York at Syracuse. She has completed both her undergraduate and graduate school in New York and Maryland. So coming to Hawaii is a treat for her. She has assisted in the HIV Neurology Clinic and participated in studies related to AIDS and ADHD. She has been active in the Performing Arts and Choir, and has enjoyed volunteering with the campus ministries. She was presented an award at Johns Hopkins University in 2001 for promoting community among undergraduates. Ruby has an interest in Child Psychiatry, and hopes to work in the minority community.

Ian Chun, MD
Graduated from Unviersity of Hawaii Ian recently graduated from JABSOM. He obtained his BA in Human Biology from Stanford University. Ian is a participant of the Imi Ho.ola Program at JABSOM. He has helped with a number of projects under the Ke .Anuenue . Area Health Education Centers, ranging from Science Day Fairs to the recruitment of native Hawaiian Children to health care careers. He did a 2-month externship to Kosrae and Ponapei after his first year in medical school. He has helped at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center doing case management and health education for underserved and indigent populations in the Leeward coast. For a period of time, he helped write grants with the Molokai General Hospital for community health projects. He has enjoyed being part of Na Kauka Mele (the Singing Doctors), and has performed at a number of places. He was the director of the only Native Hawaiian Concert Glee Club in California during his time at Stanford.

Laura J. Arensmeyer, MD
Graduated from Milton Hershey Medical Center Laura comes to us from the Milton Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania where she obtained her medical degree. She spent some time with the United States Forest Service supervising the safety of the firefighters. She spent a few months in the Philippines as a volunteer EMT helping families. While there she tutored children in English and Math. She has also volunteered time Habilitat involving other medical students. She takes an interest in Child Psychiatry and hopes to pursue her career in rural areas. She enjoys long-distance running, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Judith M. Steel, D.O.
Graduated from University of Health Sciences Judith obtained her medical degree from the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. She also obtained her BA in Medical Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and her MBA in Healthcare Leadership from the Rockhurst University in Kansas City. She has been teaching at-risk students about health and nutrition and worked with a sports medicine physician in providing pre and post participation physicals. She participated in a field study of the Leaf Cutter Ant in Panama and co-authored a research paper on this. She enjoys traveling, yoga, surfing, anthropology, and children with special health needs.

Kathryn Egan, MD
Graduated from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Kathryn is looking forward to her stay in Hawaii, since she comes to us all the way from New Jersey. She was born in New York City. She attended undergraduate school in Madison, Wisconsin and obtained her medical degree from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. She has actively participated in research projects relating to racial differences and child abuse, phenotypic and molecular analysis of paramecium mutants and sex allocation in pollinating and parasitic fig wasps. These topics have increased her interest in Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Having studied some of the research in Costa Rica, Kathryn is also fluent in Spanish. She received the Academic Excellence Award for Independent Research in 2000, and the Hilldale Research Award in 1999. When she is not studying hard at medical books, she prefers to be outdoors.

Susan Mikami, MD
Graduated from University of Hawaii Susan was born and raised here in Hawaii. She obtained her medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and received the Family Medicine Interest Group Certificate of Achievement for Leadership in 2000. She has worked in research projects with Dr. Wade Kyono, Dr. Liz Tam, and Dr. Vicky Schneider. Topics included Infections in Polynesian children, Asthma and Allergies, and Skull Fractures in Child Abuse. She has also a number of publications dating back to 1997. She enjoys singing, dancing, and body-boarding. Having spent two semesters abroad in Japan, she is also fluent in Japanese.
