1st year

Sara Barwise, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

She attended undergraduate school in Hawaii (Hilo--her home, and Chaminade) and was a Medical Specialist with the US Army for a few years, helping to deliver a baby for the first time. In the US Navy, she worked as an Aviation Hydraulics Mechanic. She was actively involved with the Tar Wars campaign, the Blood Bank of Hawaii, Kopua Farmlots Association, and Ku Ohia Laka (a forest conservation education project). She assisted these organizations as a board member or helping them to write grants. She was able to publish two articles and do a few presentations. She loves the outdoors, and thus has turned her 40-acre rainforest into an education project for the community.

Matejka Cernelc-Kohan, MD
Graduated from Univerziteta V. Ljubljani (Slovenia)

She completed a Pediatrics residency in Slovenia and participated in a Tropical Medicine elective in medical school in Zambia, delivering medicine, participating in child births, and caring for patients. She participated in a research fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology in Switzerland. She was able produce a number of publications and presentations from this experience. She has recently completed some observerships in Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Kaiser and with Dr. Stuart Rusnak. She and her family enjoy the time spent in Hawaii.

Judith Hernaez, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

She also completed her undergraduate school at the University of Hawaii, and completed one year of surgical residency training at UCSF. She participated in programs such as the Tar Wars, Aloha Medical Mission, Shriners Hospital and Red Cross of Hawaii. With her Philippine culture and Tagalog language, the Aloha Medical Mission was a valued experience. She has a number of published articles in Journals such as Cancer Research, Mutation Research, and Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.

Suda Jirasakuldej, MD
Graduated from Mahidol University, Thailand

She completed a Pediatric Residency and a Pediatric Neurology Fellowship in Thailand. Her Thailand Society memberships include Epilepsy Society, Royal College of Pediatricians, Pediatric Society, and the Thai Medical Council. She has a number of research projects, most recent one on Clinical Characteristics and CSF Profile in Children with manifestation of Fever and Seizure. She wants to enhance her skills as a Professor with her US Pediatric residency training to take back to Thailand.

Yuliya Ogai, MD
Graduated from Russian State Medical University

She completed a Pediatrics Residency in Russia and participated with the Clinical Research Center and the East-West Medical Research Institute in Hawaii as an endocrinologist and researcher. She also participated as a medical assistant with the Aloha Medical Mission. Her research study in Russia was of "Nutritional Status Evaluation and Methods of Rehabilitation of children after bowels resection during Neonatal period". She is excited to be able to apply her skills to Pediatrics.

Brian Park, MD
Graduated from University of Wisconsin--Madison

He completed a partial year of Pediatrics residency at the University of Missouri. He participated as a Research Assistant in Wisconsin in Neurology and Cellular and Molecular Biology Research. He enjoys surfing and ice hockey, and is excited to be back in Hawaii with his family.

Mariko Sato, MD
Graduated from Tohoku University--Japan

She completed a Pediatrics Residency and Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship in Japan. She has published a couple of articles in PubMed on the topic of Cardiology. She was also a research Postdoctoral fellow at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, studying heart development, and a research instructor at the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah. She plays the piano and cello and enjoys kayaking.

Jasna Starcevic, MD
Graduated from University of Belgrade, Serbia

She completed her Pediatric Residency in 3 different hospitals in Serbia and participated as a researcher with the Institute of Neonatology/Institute of Epidemiology in Serbia. She was able to publish a couple of articles in this specialty in PubMed. Having enduring the political turmoil of her country, she and her daughter are grateful for their lives in Hawaii, and she looks forward to using her past experience to enhance her care for children.

David Toturgul, MD
Graduated from St. George University

Completed his undergraduate studies at the Univ. of Pennsylvania. Recently, he created his own skincare product line, entitled Avicenna's Garden, being quite successful at his work. He was also an advisor to the St. George University Basic Sciences Foundation. He worked on an independent research with Rockefeller University. Thesis--Immunological Studies in Group A Streptococcal Positive and Rheumatic Fever Patients and has been able to present a number of posters . He is fluent in French and Turkish.

Alicia Turlington, MD
Graduated from Keck School of Medicine, Univ. of S. California

She completed her undergraduate education at Providence College, Rhode Island. She was able to lead and start a student group "End of Life Care CA", interest in palliative medicine and Hospice. She also lead a group "Health Care for All CA", interest in issues surrounding the uninsured and equal access to healthcare. She has published articles in PubMed, Korean Journal of Dermatology, and Journal of Investigative Medicine.

Teresa Vo, MD
Graduated from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine

She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of San Diego. She has volunteered on a number of organizations, namely the Pregnancy Partners of CA, America Reads/America Counts, St. Francis Hospital, and American Academy of Osteopathy. She is fluent in Vietnamese. She was also able to gain two years of experience as a medical assistant in a doctor's private office. She wants to promote prevention and education in her care of children.

Wendy Wu, MD
Graduated from Ross University

She completed her undergraduate education at Binghamton University in New York and has volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club and Peninsula Hospital of New York. She participated as a research assistant with the Dept. of Chemistry Research Group in Binghamton, NY, and was able to publish two articles. She is fluent in Chinese.

2nd year

Ty de Silva, MD
Graduated from State University of New York, Upstate

Ty is originally from Hilo, where he did volunteer work at the Hilo Medical Center. He also assisted in research studies at the University of Washington. He loves surfing and snowboarding, and is happy to be back in Hawaii around family. Ty wants to address issues related to obesity and smoking, promoting a healthy lifestyle. Eventually, he hopes to return to Hilo as a general pediatrician.

Tawni Gesteuyala, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

Tawni has worked with Dr. Kurahara with on a research paper with data collection on Acute Rheumatic Fever in a Tropical Geographic Area. She also co-authored a paper "A web-based study: Do parenting sites comply with AAP guidelines on bedsharing?" She speaks partial Japanese and is interested in outdoor sports, including scuba diving. Tawni enjoys the interaction with children, and seeks to build her trust and confidence with them.

Jesse Lam, MD
Graduated from John A.Burns School of Medicine

Jesse is happy to remain in Hawaii for his residency. He has volunteered in Palau for a summer festival, helping with their first aid needs, and has also assisted in Waianae to provide home medical assistance, such as dressing changes and medication distributions. He enjoys water sports, playing the ukulele, and propagating trees. Jesse believes that developing the Patient-Doctor relationship is a key to successful medical care.

Renee Miyashiro, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

Renee participated in the Tar Wars program, doing a presentation to 4th and 5th graders on Oahu. She also presented at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center on smoking cessation and hypnosis in the Hawaiian culture. Her interests are in volleyball and photography. She believes in being a well rounded pediatrician, offering continuing of care with access to community resources and addressing social issues.

Diane Pan, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

Diane worked with the Tar Wars program with the elementary schools. She also participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program by helping a little sister with homework on a regular basis. She has visited the Tokyo Medical University in Japan and the Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan to learn of the Asian Medical Care system as well as teach Problem Based Learning. She plays the piano, dances Tahitian, and creates Chinese calligraphy. She hopes to explore Pediatric Allergy or Dermatology, and complete a Master's Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

Teresa Shinder, DO
Graduated from Touro University College of Osteopathic Med.

Teresa comes to us from Touro University in Vallejo, California, where she did a lot of volunteer work in Community Outreach. She enjoys scuba diving, yoga, soccer, volleyball, and softball. She hopes to remain in Hawaii to practice after residency, working with immigrants and the underserved population while concentrating on teen pregnancy/STD prevention and nutrition. She believes in healthy preventative care.

Cherilyn Yee, MD
Graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine

Cherilyn founded the LIFE project (Language Interpretation for Emergencies), a pocket book to be used for emergency situations before a translator can be located. She has volunteered in the Philippines in conjunction with St. Luke's Medical Center. While she is interested in addressing the disparities in health care delivery, she is also drawn towards pediatric hematology/oncology.

3rd year

Kathy Anderson, MD
Graduated from Brown University

Kathy obtained her medical degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she also gained her undergraduate degree in Sociology. In 2005, she participated in a research study at the University of Indonesia studying reproductive age women in Jakarta, Indonesia in addition to a research with Brown University on breast cancer in Rhode Island. She has spent a number of years tutoring children with learning disabilities. She enjoys basketball, baseball and Kung Fu. She takes an interest in serving disadvantaged people in the US and abroad.

Lisa N. L. Kahikina, MD
Graduated from University of Hawaii

Lisa was born and raised in Hawaii. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Anthropology and Human Biology. She had research experience as an Undergraduate working in a molecular biology laboratory. After graduation she worked in a virology laboratory at the University of Hawaii and as a Physical Education teacher at Kapalama Elementary School before starting medical school at JABSOM. While in medical school she has acted as a mentor to Native Hawaiian medical and undergraduate students, been a leader at the Boys and Girls Club and been a volunteer at the Hauula Community Health Center. She has been involved in a variety of research projects centered around nutrition. Her other interests include distance running, travel, photography, Okinawan dance, and Native Hawaiian and cross-cultural issues.

Ryu Kuromaru, MD
Graduated from University of Miyasaki

Ryu obtained his medical degree in 1988 from the University of Miyasaki in Japan, and is a member of the Japan Pediatric Society. He received much of his training from the Miyazaki Hospital and the Kyushu University Hospital. He served a chief hospitalist of the pediatric ward at Kyushu University, after which he became a member of their faculty and head of the endocrinology and metabolism team. He then became the Program Director of the Pediatric Residency at Kyushu University, until he received his next appointment as the Vice President of Towa Hospital. His many publications include topics of Clinical Endrocrinology, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, and Growth Hormones. His most recent experience in the US has been with JABSOM.s East Asia International program with Dr. Gordon Greene and Dr. Richard Kasuya. He enjoys playing the electric guitar (Dr. Kurahara.s group??) and a Japanese type of fencing called Kendo-Player.

Jeffrey Lee, MD
Graduated from University of California, San Francisco

After graduating from Pomona College with a degree in Creative Writing, Jeff joined the game design department for Koei Co. Ltd, based in Yokohama , Japan. He returned to the U.S. after 13 months in Japan to manage game development for their American subsidiary, Koei Corporation. After a few years, he joined Electronic Arts as the youngest assistant producer in company history. He spent almost 10 years at Electronic Arts, and was promoted to full producer in 1998. He resigned in 2000 in order to attend medical school, and obtained his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He is transferring to the University of Hawaii Pediatric Program after three months as an intern at Children's Hospital, Los Angeles. He enjoys golf, poker, and still plays video games as often as he can.

Dawnell J. Moody, DO
Graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific

A native of San Diego, Dawnell Moody graduated from the University of California at Davis with a BS in Nutritional Science. She graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona California. During medical school, she was a member of an acting/dance company and volunteered in free clinics and Special Olympics. She completed a Hematology-Oncology rotation at KMC over the summer. In Hawaii she has worked in a "Get Out the Vote" campaign aimed at young people. Her hobbies include acting, dance and snowboarding whenever possible.

Sarah Nicholson, MD
Graduated from University of Hawaii

Sarah is recent graduate of JABSOM, obtaining her undergraduate degree from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. During medical School, she assisted with the Ho.ola Lahui Hawaii (under the Native Hawaiian Healthcare System) in teaching prenatal and infant care classes to agencies that assist teen mothers. Before medical school, she also taught Biology in High School and worked with many Special Education classes. She is confident her previous experience as a teacher will facilitate her role as a Pediatrician. She has been active in coaching soccer and directing surf contests on Kauai. She has worked on a couple of publications on Childhood and Youth Obesity. It is her hope to bring her medical expertise back to her home in Kauai.

Josephine (Joy) Quensell, MD
Graduated from University of Hawaii

Joy recently obtained her MD from JABSOM. She also attended undergraduate at the Univ. of Hawaii with a degree in Biology. In her third year in medical school, she worked at the Waimanalo Health Center with teen mothers. In the past, she has helped tutor students at Palolo Elementary and for the Korean Medical Student Exchange program at JABSOM. She enjoys being part of the Hula Hui O Kupunahala hula halau and has helped to organize the hula performance during her first year in medical school. In addition to hula, she is very involved with the American Youth Soccer Organization. These experiences have increased her interest towards community outreach programs and comprehensive health care.

Nina Teruya, MD
Graduated from University of Hawaii

Nina comes to us as a recent graduate of JABSOM, having completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Washington with a major in Zoology. She has participated with Dr. Kurahara with research on Acute Rheumatic Fever in Hawaii and with Dr. Loren Yamamoto on a project entitled .Retention of pediatric bag-mask ventilation efficacy skill by inexperienced medical student resuscitators using standard bagmask ventilation masks, pocket masks, and blob masks.. She also participated in a research study with Dr. Frankel at Queen.s on Hansen.s Disease, which was presented at the 16th International Leprosy Congress. She did a one-month preceptorship in Okinawa, Japan with Internal Residents on the wards. She has coached volleyball and been a Karate instructor. She also enjoys golf and longboarding.
