Community Pediatrics

The mission of the Community Pediatrics Division in the UH JABSOM Department of Pediatrics is to “improve the health of children, adolescents, families, and communities in Hawai`i and the Pacific. We are committed to providing excellence in clinical care, training, research, and advocacy for all children, especially those who are underserved. We strive to be nationally recognized role models and teachers for the next generation of physicians”.

Clinical Activities

The Division’s clinical activities include the general and subspecialty care of children and families in the newborn nursery, the Kapi‘olani Children’s Specialty Center, and the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children (KMCWC), and at the Queen Emma Clinics and Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Health Center. Division members care for close to 50 percent of newborns delivered at KMCWC. In addition, the Division provides subspecialty services in developmental and behavioral pediatrics and adolescent medicine, and pediatric consultative care for children hospitalized at Shriners Hospital.

Medical Education

The Community Pediatrics Division is responsible for medical student, resident, and fellow education in academic general pediatrics, for the University of Hawaii Pediatric Residency Program’s (UHPRP) Continuity of Care Primary Care Program, for subspecialty training in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics thru its ACGME-accredited and HRSA-funded Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Leadership Training Program (DeeBeePeds Program), and for interdisciplinary training thru its HRSA-funded Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LEND) Program. In addition, the HRSA-funded Koko‘okolu Community Pediatrics Fellowship Program (KCPFP) provides training in community based participatory research.
